Revit Shared Parameters Management Tools

UPDATE: Latest SP.Writer can be found HERE PLEASE READ: The file format for this utility should be .xlsm. If you are using Internet Explorer to download the utility it will likely rename the file to .zip. Please rename the extension from .zip to .xlsm and then open in Excel. Apparently some users have been unable to use the utility because of this. Apologies for any confusion. I always hear first hand from companies and end users the difficulties they have managing their shared parameters files under the Autodesk Revit platform. Lets be honest, it isn’t a fun task and Autodesk has done little to make our lives easier. Some companies are still not implementing schedules in Revit just due to the fact that Shared Parameters are so difficult and time consuming to work with. This post will showcase two utilities for managing shared parameters. The first, Revit SP.Writer, is a Excel tool that I have been working on with a former co-worker of mine Phil Cunningham.  It is intended to allow users to create, manage and organize their shared parameters outside of Revit easily allowing for importing and exporting compatible files. The second tool was built from the source released by IBD on the BIM Advent … Continue reading

Revit MEP: Invalid Duct Fitting K-Factor Database

Ever received this warning? It’s been documented extensively in the Autodesk blogs here, and here. What Autodesk failed to mention is what may be the real cause of the issue is. In my experience I have been able to narrow it down to a conflict with a commonly used ASHRAE Duct Fitting Database utility. While the folks at Auodesk might not be reaching for this utility too often it is fairly common in the design industry to have both applications installed at the same time. It seems that they both reference the same culprit ASHRAEDUCTDLL.dll binary. Based on the descriptions of the fix for the problem Windows registry gets confused when both applications are installed. I have since uninstalled the ASHRAE utility and run the fix quoted below from Inside the System and things are back to normal. Hopefully Autodesk fixes this issue in 2012 and patches it up for 2010 and 2011. Try running this after uninstalling the ASHRAE utility if the removal alone doesn’t fix the problem. 1. Click on Start, then Run 2. Type regsvr32 “C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit MEP 2011\Program\ASHRAEDUCTDLL.dll” in the window 3. Click OK Thats it!

Revit Family Browser by Kiwi Code Solutions

I just stumbled across this Revit Add-In that provides family browser functionality very similar to the toolbars implemented in AutoCAD, but with some excellent additional features. Version 3 is currently available at a very reasonable price. I am in no way affiliated with the application, check it out and let me know what you think. Seems like something worth looking into when i get back to the office. Revit Family Browser v3 We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of Family Browser version 3 from our downloads Page. After extensive feedback from users we have added a huge range of features to this edition. These include to name a few: 1. UI enhancements, like mouseover show/hide & left/right hand tabs 2. Family Search function 3. Drag and drop from Windows Explorer 4. Extract Families from Revit Project onto Family Browser tab. 5. Add Walls to Family Browser 6. What we believe to be the World’s first UI for creating and editing Family Type Catalogues. A new features video can be viewed below
