The OpenStudio version 0.7.0 release focuses on extensions to the SDK to enable a comprehensive, workflow-centric application that complements the SketchUp Plug-in. The new OpenStudio Application integrates SystemOutliner’s functionality from release 0.6.0 and expands on its “drag and drop” paradigm for model resources. This capability will be integrated with the Building Component Library in the next major release (0.8.0) of OpenStudio. Other noteworthy features of the new application include: visual editing of schedules extensibility via the integration of user scripts into multiple points in the workflow a simulation results summary and support for IP units

<official release notes can be found at the NREL OpenStudio page> Release Notes Overview The OpenStudio version 0.6.0 release builds on the changes made in 0.5.0, which introduced spaces and space types to the model. Some of the highlights of the 0.6.0 release are support for EnergyPlus 7, template HVAC systems, Green Building XML (gbXML) import, initial integration with the Building Component Library, and annual climate-based Radiance simulations of your spaces along with lighting schedules for EnergyPlus simulations. NOTE: A temporary limitation of the refactor is that some EnergyPlus data, which was passed unchanged through tools like the SketchUp Plug-In prior to the refactor, has not been translated to the OpenStudio Model yet and therefore is lost on import from EnergyPlus IDF files. In addition, this release is not backwards compatible with data files from previous OpenStudio releases, and no tools have been provided to upgrade data files from version 0.5 and earlier. New Features OpenStudio Platform 0.6.0 OpenStudio now supports EnergyPlus 7.0 OpenStudio now supports the import of gbXML files. This version of gbXML import supports the Campus, Building, Space, Surface, SubSurface, Construction, Material, Schedule, ScheduleWeek, and ScheduleDay elements. A formal structure has been created to support the creation … Continue reading →

EnergyPlus Version 7.0 and OpenStudio Legacy Plug-in 1.07 Available The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released an updated version of EnergyPlus simulation software for modeling heating, cooling, lighting, ventilating, and other building energy flows. Additionally, a new version of OpenStudio Plug-in for Google SketchUp is available, which makes it possible to perform EnergyPlus simulations using Google’s user-friendly 3-D drawing interface. Visit www.energyplus.gov to learn more and download EnergyPlus and OpenStudio Plug-in now. Enhancements in the New Versions General * Significant speed increases, most simulations see up to 20% reduction in execution time, depending on features used (also speed increase for many AirflowNetwork simulations and large models with radiant systems–see below). Datasets * New input data sets for HVAC equipment performance for rooftop packaged air conditioners and heat pumps (see DXCoolingCoil.idf and RooftopPackagedHeatPump.idf). * Extended the library of refrigerant data to include R407a and superheated CO2 properties (see FluidPropertiesRefData.idf). * New input data set for exhaust-fired chiller heater model (see ExhaustFiredChiller.idf). Input * Steam is now a “built-in” fluid property. Windows and Daylighting * International Glazing Data Base (IGDB) full spectral data can be used directly. Zone and Surface Models * Shadowing Model new options: legacy “convex” Weiler-Atherton or Sutherland-Hodgman … Continue reading →

The joint venture of LBNL, Infosys and others documented on this site in the past has gotten an official name it appears … Simergy! Check out the more information on the project at the LBNL Simergy website Simergy is a comprehensive graphical user interface (GUI) for the US Department of Energy’s building energy simulation program EnergyPlus that will be free to the end user when it is released in 2012. User requirements were defined through a series of workshops for practitioners. Simergy includes a ‘drag and drop’ component-level schematic editor for HVAC systems. Building envelope geometry can be imported from CAD / BIM tools using the industry standard protocols IFC and gbXML or can be generated by Simergy. A comprehensive set of templates and libraries is being developed, as well as an interactive output reporting framework. Simergy is planned to include a comprehensive set of well-documented Application Programming Interfaces (API’s) to facilitate development of third party contributions. Simergy is being developed by a public/private partnership led by LBNL. Professional versions of the GUI are planned by private sector partners.

Geometry is now contained by a space rather than a thermal zone. One or a number of spaces combine to create a thermal zone. Spaces can also be associated with a space type and a building story. More New in OpenStudio 0.5 (The Object Inspector) This video introduces you to the new Object Inspector in the OpenStudio SketchUp Plugin. This is the next generation of the Object Information Window. Instead of an HTML dialog within SketchUp, this is it’s own application that launches and quits with SketchUp. Data from the model is synchronized between the SketchUp and Inspector window. When you select an object in SketchUp, this is where you can see and alter attributes. For most situations this will replace the need to use OpenStudio ModelEditor. More Applying Surface Constructions in OpenStudio 0.5 This video describes the different ways you can apply surface constructions to your model.
I recently had the chance to get my hands on a second beta version of Bentley’s new AECOsim Energy Simulator for building simulation. The version I tested was v08.11.07.78. The first time I had a chance to see AECOsim was at the ASHRAE BEM Conference where it was demonstrated by Dru Crawley. Soon after I received the first Beta which was not at a good state for review. This version however is at a point where it is worth previewing. The overview of the interface is that it is built into the Bentley Microstation platform offering a familiar CAD style interface with various 2D and 3D views for model creation. Right and Left click methods and tool bars will be familiar to Microstation users, but maybe not for others. A ribbon style main toolbar now part of most modern .NET Windows applications is also available in the interface to organize the various built-in utilities and menus. I only used the application for a short period of time, so it is possible my review may touch upon areas that I did not fully understand, in which case I will update this post should I find anything was incorrect due to my inexperience. Keep reading below for my full review.
